Spoilers below!
This movie is extremely difficult for me to rate. While I understand going in a new direction with scooby-doo to keep up with the new generation, I am slightly disappointed.
My 2 year old son, loves this movie! Which brought on a whole scooby-doo obsessed child, the originals, and the new. So I thank this movie for getting my son into The Scooby-Doo movie, and Scooby-Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed, and of course, The original Cartoons.
Historically, this movie failed. The first mystery the mystery inc gang solved was the black knight ghost, not some guy in a mansion in a Halloween mask. That part really bummed me out. 😩 multiple references in the original scooby doos, including scooby-doo where are you. Refers to the “first mystery solved” being The Black Knight Ghost.
I am ignoring that though for the sake of it being a cartoon, and come on Kelsey, don’t take it so seriously, it’s not a big deal.
And shaggy didn’t have a smart phone when he met scooby. But the whole thing about shaggy being a sad kid, who needed a friend. That was heart warming. The thought was cute , the execution of it needs work.
I was disappointed about the recasting of the voice and it took me a year to watch the movie, and that was just because somebody else put it on for my son, and as I said , it has turned him into a scooby-doo fanatic (thank you karma, I’m finally getting paid back for the nonstop scooby-doo I made my parents watch as I was growing up. I still know the dang movies by heart and I’m 23 years old now).
I enjoy watching the movie if I don’t think of it as a scooby-doo movie. I don’t really appreciate that from the very start we knew the bad guy was dick dastardly. In the original scooby-doos it was more of a mystery. Not just getting told flat out “hey this is the bad guy. We’re racing to get these dog skulls” whatever. It’s a different age. But I remember scooby-doo movies having an off-the-wall unmasking and then Velma explains to the gang , the motive behind it, and how the costume came about.
I don’t like that Fred didn’t set any traps. I do like that they are giving scooby and shaggy more credit and more screen time, but com’on the whole gang had like 20 minutes, and they didn’t even make it to the cover of the blu-ray case. 🙄
While I have all of the negative out of the way (which I could go on and on about but I think you guys get the picture.) it’s not a classic scooby doo movie. It’s a whole other direction from what we’re used to.
The positives: the music makes my son happy, (me not so much. Like we didn’t need to make it all modern music. But again, it’s not a huge deal.) and it’s good for children who didn’t grow up watching the movies. I like the animation. That it’s all bright colors and grips kids attention. I do feel like it was a marketing ploy to get money, but it worked. They got my money. Because my two year old was obsessed until I introduced him to the classics. Now he’s obsessed with those. 😂
I give the overall movie 4 stars because it is a great movie if you don’t get too caught up on it being mystery inc and the gang. Like pretend they are all new characters that you didn’t spend your entire childhood watching. Then it’s great.
