First off, I'm not here to trash the film. It has the usual Wes Anderson charm and style, but the movie fell flat. Wes is of that old-school Hollywood where people will go to see the film because a particular director directs it. Unlike The Grand Budapest Hotel, Anderson's most commercially successful and well-received movie, this film has a bloated and overly complicated script with what could have easily been two separate movies. Honestly, one storyline could have been cut from the film, and not only would the movie have been shorter, it would have been more coherent.
With a stellar star-studded cast of Wes regular and new old Hollywood stars, fantastic set design, and gorgeous cinematography Astroid City had all the ingredients to make a tremendous four-course meal. Alas, all the audience gets is an overly complicated stew that leaves the viewer unsure what he has just eaten and whether it was enjoyable. Luckily, Wes Andeson is an efficient filmmaker who generally has lower than industry-standard budgets. Ultimately, the film will make money but will go down in the books as one of his lesser works. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson, check it out. However, you might come away disappointed.
3/5 Stars
SPOILER, you could have used a portion of the secondary story to create a twist where the audience discovers that the events occurring at Astorid City are nothing but a play, which wouldn't have changed anything in the movie except for the fact that the run time would have been 20 minutes less.
