I really enjoyed the hbo version but I have read the several of the books by Erle Stanley Gardiner and also read his Donald Lamb series under the pseudonym A.A.Fair. The books were grittier, and the original television series was definitely sanitized. This version is really interesting; not certain I will love it; but definitely sure I like it.
