This movie is phenomenal, and has a very symbolically accurate interpretation of hell. As a college student studying journalism, one of my classes is Medieval Literature and the study of Ancient Greek philosophies. This movie captured many references to Dante’s Inferno, and classical Ancient Greek inscriptions such as “abandon all faith, ye who enters here” to ultimately bring out an essence of realness. Even down to the damned grabbing at Scarlett’s feet in the river of blood, I found that to resonate with the 7th circle (level 1) of hell within Dante’s inferno, and felt all the more creeped out as the historical reference and accuracy made the film feel even realer. Any horror movie that’s capable of making me feel as though it could happen in real life, and makes me feel as if I am right there with them in their situation is an automatic 5/5 stars for me, especially this one as it’s based off of a literal slow and creeping descent into hell.
