There is no kingdom. There is no coherent plot. I was expecting to see what I’ve been waiting for in this whole series: apes dominating humans in a believable civilization. Sure there’s 20 minutes of world building about Noa’s clan and the connection with birds, but that never gets explained. Why did they create an alliance with birds? How did this get started? This obviously separates this clan from other apes we’ve seen in the trilogy.
After the trilogy ended, I was expecting to see some major evolutions and developments in the ape world. Koba was writing. Cesar organized the apes. Why are there no ape schools or sense of government or structure in the ape society? These apes don’t even know what zebras are and they have no understanding of the apes around them. I would expect with several generations since the trilogy that they’d have trade or markets and some kind of civilization. It seems like a very odd writing decision to go to a clueless clan that is disconnected from the rest of ape kind, especially when the movie is titled Kingdom of the apes. It would have made more sense to make a movie about the order of Cesar that Raka spoke about. At least that indicates some level of organization, and an ability to shape metal to make the necklace. It would be pretty cool to see blacksmith apes.
The whole movie just feels like a missed opportunity with very little connection to the title. It’s as though the title and the film are not related at all. From my perspective, if a stronger animal becomes as intelligent as humans, than humans would no longer be the dominant species. Our intelligence has allowed us to wield nature and use technology to run the world. I would expect to see apes using human technology or at the very least creating their own. I feel like it was not worth the 2.5 hours of watching.
