I’d been waiting years for this game - it was the final excuse I needed to buy a PS5 and sadly, I was hugely disappointed.
I absolutely loved Diablo 3, but it feels like Diablo 4 is just a glossier version of it with all of the fun sucked out. The main reason for this is the utterly bizarre decision to scale enemies to your character’s level. Blizzard say this is in order that players can explore the game in whatever order they choose, but this comes at the expense of so many other things.
Each time you level up, each time you learn a new skill, each time you get a new item…it means nothing. Because the enemies you just defeated scale to your character level. There is no sense of power, no sense of progression, no reward for grinding. This was literally the heart and soul of Diablo and it’s been taken away. The scaling has also caused numerous other shortcomings with the gameplay, namely:
- Every battle is just a DPS race
- If a boss is too hard, you can’t grind to boost a few levels and then try again. You’re pretty much stuck, short of changing your World Tier
- Side quests are pointless (why go after extra XP if enemies just level with you?) and offer pitiful rewards
- You can’t travel quickly through areas you’ve completed anymore - if enemies didn’t scale, you could just march on through and ignore them because they can’t do much damage. But now, everywhere you go you have to stop, slog it out with a load of mobs, and carry on again
I am quite frankly astonished that Blizzard took the decision to scale enemies because it is literally game breaking and goes against everything that was fun and good about Diablo. If it doesn’t get patched I think I’ll complete the campaign but not bother with any endgame content or additional characters.
It’s just not fun anymore, and if it’s not fun, what’s the point?
