This is not Three Cups of Tea, or A Million Little Pieces, stories that were fictionalized passed off as non-fiction. This is a novel and it tells an important story. It was a compelling read. If Cummins is to be villified then so should Margaret Mitchell for Gone with the Wind's portrayal of slavery, or T. C. Boyle's view of immigration in The Tortilla Curtain, and every other white person who has written about slavery or Native Americans or immigrants or urban violence... The only criticism that is valid in this troubling incident as the criticism of how non-white writers are not equally treated by publishers. That's something we should pay attention to.
