It's now 2024. The production of this movie in 1987 (having lived through those years) was so surprising! The background music, the illustration of the Turkish baths, the staring without expression, the atrocious casting: all so without any of the current thought or planning and yet so intentional! I watched it in awe! Was A&E so belabored back then? I didn't remember it that way. It was almost as if the producer hated the book. How much better the story has been covered more recently by producers who appreciate Ms Austen for the brilliant satirist she was. What a wild experience.
