No offense to any actors or actresses, even the director, but as a teenager preparing for an entrance exam and wishing to get into a good college, I absolutely hate how the lead just gave up on getting into a decent college for his crush(?).
Sure, we should care about and respect our friends and the people in our lives, but to me, the movie felt as and ode to college-is-so-boring-i-just-don't-give-a-shit-about-it trope. Celia was practically unpassionate about everything in her life, she had no ambitions, no goals. In the end, Brooks ends up being the same. The movie glorifies having no goals in life. It manipulates teenagers into thinking that it's okay to give up on your hopes and dreams, so long as you get into a relationship at 17-18, which in all honesty, doesn't have much chances of lasting.
To me, that's what this movie was about, and I actively disliked it for that.
Edit: I read a few reviews, complaining that Celia was such a not-lie-other-girls. I don't particularly remember thinking that while watching the movie, but I do hate that trope.
