Our family sat down to watch this new years eve with our two sons (8 and 10) and we all thoroughly enjoyed it! Here are some takeaways with MAJOR spoilers.
1. I loved the exploration of the intergenerational father-son dynamic.
2. As a multiracial, Latin family it is so great to see that represented as the norm.
3. Some PP have commented on the "sexuality" of one of the characters being inappropriate for a kids movie. You know what scene my EIGHT YEAR OLD cringed at? Anytime the mom and dad kissed. He literally said "Eww they're gross like you two!" This generation - they're alright, but apparently they are not above being weirded out by their parents. Which I'm totally cool with.
4. The underlying message that we are all part of something big that is interconnected and depends on each part. It gave me hope. My kids instantly got it . It's what FERN GULLY and Captain Planet did for us as kids.
5. I would LOVE to have a someone with a science degree sit down and tell me how accurately or innacuratetely the "creatures" were translated to be what I gather to be synapses, white blood cells etc. In one of the first scenes in the STRANGE WORLD I said - Its like lungs, and was there a scene that those trees looked like mitochondria?? It was so cool which lead to our next reveal
6. Early on my husband said "It's going to be a turtle" There are many creation stories that say humanity lives on the back of a great turtle. And in this movie they do!
The fact that DISNEY made this movie encompassing so many elements , and still gave us humor and insight and a story filled with hope and growth and redemption.
Ugh. It's worth your time.
