It is a fictional story based on true events (lost from many history books) that happened to mainly Indian children in Oklahoma. There were many other orphan children in 1909 and they all came together and became known as "Elf Children”. The bad guys, and I purposely won’t tell you who they are, were stealing the land from the (indigenous) Indian children in the story. Because of this they were forced to live and beg, and yes, in some cases steal food to survive.
The book is set in 1909 with the children’s characters and in 1990 it is set in the same area as the children but the characters are now centered around a National Park. The park becomes the setting to a mystery of the disappearance of a little girl’s grandmother. The story of the park intertwines with 1909. Can you solve the mystery?
Once again, Lisa Wingate has written a wonderful historical treat of a little known event of historical proportions. Make sure to add Shelterwood to your TBR pile.
Not to be missed.
