I’ve gotta be honest, this campaign has been a major let-down. We’ve been following the story of Master Chief for 20 years now, with a story line that tends to pick up in each game right where the previous one left off (or close to it). Infinite does not. Halo 5’s campaign was a massive and epic build up, a comeback on 343’s part after the disaster of a game that was Halo 4. The Chief’s hunt for Cortana and her crazy plan to conquer the galaxy with an army of Guardians, a desperate measure to stop her, Chief barely escaping her grasp at the end just before she takes off. It seemed as if the next campaign would involve the UNSC going into hiding, staying offline to avoid being caught while Blue Team and the Arbiter’s army engaged in epic battles against Guardians and one final hunt to destroy or contain Cortana for good. Literally none of that happened. Instead, we get the Banished out of nowhere, Chief prancing around on a largely barren Ring pulling up on run-down stations and camps, and Cortana literally just dies in the most anti-climatic way possible. There’s no story pick-up, no Guardians, no explanation, no Arbiter, no Blue Team, nothing. For all of Halo 5’s build up, this campaign came nowhere close to carrying the torch it passed. Worse, the hyped open world element is dreadfully boring compared to that found in real RPG games, and the fact that there are hardly any classic-style linear campaign missions is a major letdown. I was having fun at first, then I entered the open world and lost interest by day 3. All around this campaign has been the worst failure of the franchise so far, dare I say even worse than Halo 4. 343 has no business running Halo and it shows. I’m astonished that any long-time Halo players can enjoy this trash at all. I’ll be sticking to the classics and 5.
