This is a great movie, but it's interesting that it was released in 2019. It came out literally one year too early. Had it been released in 2020 or after 2020, it would've been one of the most important movies in the pantheon of American movies. However, given the "early' release, it was still a commercial success, which signals that the main issue of police shooting Black Americans is a well-known phenomenon in American society.
The film deep down is a road adventure film and it captures how polarized the country has become. It avoids a lot of pitfalls that are present in films that attempt to capture the national mood at any point in time. It does this by what I would term the "de-stressing or de-emphasizing" the heavy issue at hand - which is that Queen and Slim at the end of the day are criminals no matter how you look at it. After all, they did take a life, although in a fair legal system they would've been mostly exonerated for doing so (manslaughter probably wouldn't have been exonerated). We all know that the legal system in America isn't fair, especially to working class Blacks. The movie de-stresses or de-emphasizes the fact that they're criminals by juxtaposing that with the beauty of the American South. Ugly daily horror in such a beautiful and picturesque and interesting land - such is the story of America.
