A Mortal

A distinct, compelling, and unique world, solid characters and story. I think the main thing that holds this anime back in comparison to big name anime like One piece, Naruto, ect - it doesn't have over-the-top action or comedy (The show often comes off as stoic - and as such some will see this anime as boring. I do NOT recommend this anime if you're looking for an action-heavy show - go watch one-punch man or Mob Psycho for that.) - rather one thing I like about the show is that there's a good amount of realism. Like the main character starts out as a weakling... and guess what, 3 seasons in - he's still pretty much a weakling. It's actually a important part of his story - this character struggling with his weakness and trying to find ways to contribute to his team and become more useful. < I feel that this sort of realism helps viewers get invested in character's growth - in comparison to shows like dragon ball where it seems like falling down a couple of stairs can make you 10 times stronger. That said, this anime's main strength is it's world-design/building, imo - as someone who's watched hundreds of anime this anime ranks in my overall top 30 - but in world-building it's probably in my top 10. If you like anime with a distinct world - I recommend the anime "Magi" - In terms of it's 'world' it's just as good if not better than World Trigger - but it's pacing and comedy are much better - and it's much better at setting up hype moments and action scenes.

Unique. Because of the animations origins and unique culture, I think that's the best way to describe it. While Onyx Equinox is far from exceptional in terms of writing and dialog, the show explores a culture that I've seen very little of, and I found it genuinely intriguing. That said, most of the characters actually felt quite lacking to me. The main character seems okay, but most of the rest of the cast feels pretty 'one-note', and not in an appealing way. Character development is lacking (Only like 2 characters 'develop' in the course of the 1st season... barely.) and the pacing of the show, while not unpleasant, certainly doesn't leave me feeling exited. Onyx Equinox, to me, is worth the watch, but I'd certainly never go back to re-watch it.
