बहादुर
Yesterday on 29th November, We were privileged to be invited for the world premiere of Meghna Gulzar’s
“ SAMबहादुर”- biopic of Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw at PVR, Juhu. It was star studded premier and in screen 5, me, Leena and her boss had the rare opportunity to jostle with stars . The premier had the glittering presence of Meghana Gulzar, Producer Ronnie Screwvala, Actors of the film- Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Mohd Jeeshan Ayub and Anjan Srivastava. We watched the movie with friends and co-actors of Vicky and Katerina Kaif - Siddharth Malhotra, Sara Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Varun Sharma ( of Fukrey fame) . Many of the seasoned directors- Anurag Basu , Anand L Rai, Subhash Ghai were also present. Everyone joined hands in cheering Vicky and Meghana Gulzar
Covering 40 years of glorious career of General Sam Manekshaw , known for his bravery, benevolence and outspoken wit & sense of humour without any dull moment was most challenging and Meghana ( Boski) Gulzar,(whose “ Raazi” , “ Talwar” and “ Filhaal” are my favourites) came out with flying colours. The film portrays vital chapters of the unusual and exceptional military leader of post independence India -SFJ Manekshaw, named “ Sam Bahadur ” by a Gurkha regiment guard in an innocent moment and embraced by him lovingly.
The film without going in deeper details and mostly in episodic manner , covers his early days in IMA, Dehradun and his bonhomie with Yahya khan, 5 wars-Second world war in Burma, 1948 Kashmir Aggression of Pakistani tribals backed by Army 1962 Indo China war and 1965 Pakistan war & Bangladesh creation in 1971 War with Pakistan. The script by Meghana, Shantanu Srivastava and Bhavani Iyer is well researched , fast paced and numerous in places
Vicky Kaushal is the shining star of this film. Like Sardar Udham, he plays Sam Manekshaw to the perfection. He has brought his unique persona alive with his mannerisms, his walking hunch, his British style speaking and typical Gentleman soldier was a treat to watch. Sanyal Malhotra as his wife Salloo Manekshaw was epitome of grace and beauty.
However, same could not be said about Fatima Sana Sheikh- whose Indira Gandhi is lacklustre at beat. Even Neeraj Kabi’s portrayal of Pt Nehru leaves much to desired. Govind Namdev as Sardar Patel and Anjan Srivastava as YB Chavan looked and acted quite automatically.
“Samबहादुर “ is first attempt on biopic of the extraordinary army chief , who was given the honour of India’s first Field Marshal- in most honest and earnest manner.
One may pick up shortcomings here and there, but film is a treat to watch, that too for new generations youngsters, who do not know much about him.
Highly recommended- must watch .
