The most brilliant, underrated, ahead of its time Rock album of the last 25 years. Electronica at the forefront of Rock and Roll, nearly a decade ahead of when EDM went mainstream. You may not be able to sing along to this music as if they were Pop songs, but the germs of later pop hits are sprinkled throughout.
(Let yourself not get caught up in the Rock, Pop, EDM, Electronica labels, used here as touchstones.)
This is one of those left-field albums that far too many people came to with expectations that couldn't be met. Listen to it simply as a musician stretching his artistic legs and finding a new musical territory, one stumbled into, loud and eccentric and awe-inspiring and beautiful.
With a little bit of anagramistic punning, Modulate implies "Mould (album) #8" And the concurrent album "Loud Bomb" which Bob didn't credit to himself, is an anagram for "Bob Mould" and a much further plunge into Electronica.
