Besides a few easter eggs, Tolkien fans are not going to like this. It feels like a generic fantasy story with a very surface level understanding of Tolkien’s work, if not a flat out rejection of it.
It’s not terrible television (hopefully not with the small country sized budget for each episode), but it will likely not be remembered a year after it’s final airing.

The book takes place about 30 seconds after the first one, so obviously read that one first.
This book does a great job not feeling like a soulless cash grab like a lot of long awaited sequels. It’s not AS thought provoking as the first and the climax feels a bit rushed but overall, it is still a worthy successor to the first book.
