The movie is a massive metaphor for the grotesque obsession with staying young. On one hand, I appreciate that this theme is being addressed—it’s about time. On the other hand, it’s not done very well. Demi Moore is undeniably good at what she does, and while this works with the story’s intent, as it unfolds, she starts becoming grotesque herself, in a way that feels unsettling.
So much more could have been woven into the story to make it better, to bring the point across. The relationship between the two characters is crass—not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s shallow and lacks the depth to really drive the point home. It could have been a much more honest take on the relationship we have with ourselves—a love-hate dynamic where we’re constantly battling between what we want to be and what we are, despising both sides without even admitting it.
The concept is solid, but the execution falls flat. It feels like they had something big in their hands and let it slip through the cracks, leaving behind what could have been a powerful exploration of something universal and raw. Instead, it just grazes the surface.
The ending is to put it mildly, total SHIT.
