This film is nothing like the book. The film producers obviously did not read the book properly or they would not have cast year 12s instead of 12 year olds. At the beginning chapter nine it says, "for the first time in his twelve years of life, Jonas felt separate. So not a year 12 but aged 12. Spoiled the whole film
