Hard to watch, I could barely finish it.
This movie was definitely not a win, and as a hardcore Disney fan that is really hard for me to say because I always wish them the best. This movie some how made me feel bored, uncomfortable and angry all at the same time.
Bored: the plot is all over the place and yet I still don’t care about any of it. It is all about her struggle with her peers, her mom, and herself. This could be done well with good writing and a fun main character, but that is all not true. Mei Lee is very unlikeable, I actually sympathizes more with the people that dislike her. She is very winny, acts and dresses like she is in elementary school. Her only personality is that she hates her mom and loves 4 town. Her friends are extremely two dimensional characters that could honestly not be in the film and I wouldn’t be sad.
Uncomfortable: I wish this movie advertisement had warned me there would be so much talk about periods. I am a woman myself and yet this movie still made me feel awkward, I can’t imagine male audiences felt very good about it. All the puberty talk is not done in a discrete or funny way. It is just forced upon viewers and makes me wish I had never watched the film at all.
Angry: the way she treats her mom is truly disrespectful. It made me wish her mom would just smack her across the face and tell her to get a hold of herself. AND AT THE END THE MOM IS THE WRONG ONE. They don’t both admit their faults. It is all the mom’s fault. Yeah hard pass. And the dad has like two lines, making him look like an idiot.
