Saw rom-com and flinched. Saw Keanu and Wynona and accepted my fate thinking, "At least I like both actors. I can stomach this for a date night."
Was pleasantly surprised. This movie took the concept of a romantic comedy and flipped it on its ear. It's a pessimistic, cynical, hopeless not-so-love story that kept me invested the whole time.
Keanu and Wynona's chemistry was incredible. The script is dialogue heavy but it doesn't matter because the characters banter is truly enjoyable. I also had many laughs mostly due to well paced awkward moments where you can tell that the actors were having fun being odd.
You actually want these poor, sad, fragmented souls to find each other. Not so they will live happily ever after, but so that they will live pessimistically ever after, pointing at everyone else's failing attempts at love and happiness, scrutinizing them and berating them for being idiots and then turning to each other and saying. "How the hell do we manage?" Then shrugging and going to bed.
Such a great spin on a classic rom-com and certainly worth a watch.
