I wanted to love it. I really, really wanted to love it. But the romance between the main two characters, a major part of the movie, just wasn’t working for me and I didn’t really care about them. A lot of screen time felt wasted with (admittedly very beautiful) shots of the two of them holding hands in the sunset. The plot was all over the place, and many parts felt forced or incomplete. There was a lot of representation, with a deaf character who spoke in signs language, main characters of many different races, and a gay character with a family. They also did a good job with the historical scenes, especially when they had characters speak in ancient languages instead of English the whole time. But, I also felt like this movie would have been so much better if it focused on different characters than the main couple, because everyone else was just way more interesting but didn’t have enough time to develop properly. Another thing this movie tried to do was introduce and develops so many main characters. Even with a lot of amazing actors, most of their personalities fell short for various reasons: lack of screen time, lack of chemistry with other characters, or simply snappy lines that just didn’t make sense with what we had seen of them.
All in all, this movie was disappointing and felt like it was reaching for something that it didn’t quite touch.
