Movie does not stick to the source material and characters are bland and unexplained. They introduce a new character who is constantly portrayed as a failure who can’t even beat a regular ufc fighter in the begging of the movie, and then he suddenly manages to kill Goro (one of the most powerful characters in the MK lore) on his first try. The whole movie is rushed and doesn’t understand it’s own rules, for example you have main character constantly saying how he can’t go back to his family because it’s going to put them in danger and then after again being a failure suddenly forgets about that and goes back to them and of course puts them in danger. Also you have Raiden who supposedly can’t interfere with what happens in the world and can’t help the fighters and then he forgets about that by the end of the movie and kinda intervene heavily by transporting everybody in convenient place for the fights and attacks main villain (after saying he can’t do that and letting one of the better characters die to the same villain).
Basically if you take main character and his family from the movie nothing changes in the story, which tells you how small of an impact he has on the movie and how unimportant he really is. This movie is such a disappointment for me as a fan of the video games and the first movie in 1995, and the actual amazing lore that this franchise actually has.
If writers just stick to what millions of fans already like about this franchise this movie and this franchise have a potential to be the next marvel avengers kind of movie, where you have a solid 5-6 movies packed with actual lore and characters everybody likes and would like to see on the screen.
Also why is Mortal Kombat always about “we lost 9 out of 10 tournaments and we need to win this one”… Mortal Kombat has such a big lore with a lot of characters from different dimensions so create a story about different dimensions and characters in that dimensions and fights between them. Create a movie about how some characters become who they are in the games, give the fans new ways to enjoy this amazingly big world full of amazing characters who deserve to be explained so the fans can fall in love with them before they end up in the actual tournament.
This movie made me so angry because I love the franchise and they were so lazy and rushed everything for a couple of good fights. It is really a shame!
Only good thing in the movie is couple of good fights and even those could be better, they feel clunky and characters do moves that have nothing to do with fighting and are more there just so it looks good (it doesn’t, it looks weird).
Last but not least while watching the movie I didn’t pay attention on music because they made it so generic and bland, and you hear the actual MK theme music in the last couple of minutes of the movie so you never feel pumped for the fights, and they even changed the main MK song so they can put more bass in it???? Why??? Just why? That song was a symbol of MK and please don’t change something that already works perfectly and doesn’t need changing.
I have so many more things to say but I hope they are going to learn from this experience and try harder next time.
