A lot of people may assume this film is a romanticism of cannibalism however I see it as a metaphor for the disgusting and visceral nature of overwhelming compulsive love. The relationship between Maren and Lee shows the raw necessities of such a relationship, so much so that in the closing scene of the film Lee wishes for Maren to eat him ‘Bones and All’ claiming that it’s the easiest thing and highlighting that for them, consuming one another is as easy as loving eachother.
