Undoubtedly a seminal work on street vending. The ethnography conducted by Duneier offers deep insights into the living of vendors of books and magazines on Sixth Avenue, New York. However, one cannot leave aside the criticisms pointed out by Loïc Wacquant in his "Scrutinizing the Street: Poverty, Morality, and the Pitfalls of Urban Ethnography" and the further rejoinder "What Kind of Combat Sport is Sociology" by Duneier. These three pieces together form a very fruitful debate about street vending, advantages and limits of ethnography, and the challenges of linking micro and macrosociology.
