I enjoyed this book significantly more than glass sword, which was a pretty big let down to be honest.
Personally, I loved the Evangeline and Cameron perspectives a lot, and I felt that there should have been more of those chapters in the books as in my opinion they are slightly better characters than Mare.
What I do find, as well, is that Maven’s transition from the sweet guy in the first book, to this creepy, messed up king character, is a little bit sudden. Like, I know that he is not the person he was pretending to be, but it still feels like a very big jump. Victoria Aveyard could’ve perhaps added a little more hints in the first book to pick up on second reads of it..
Apart from that, I did enjoy the plot, and found it refreshingly well paced towards the middle and end.
The final thing I’m going to mention in this chaotic review is a fairly major plot hole I’m pretty sure I found in Morry’s escape..
There is a guy who can create illusions whose name currently escapes me, and aids Cameron in the escape attempt by having a fake plane crash etc. This sounds pretty foolproof as fantasy dystopian novels go, BUT, there is a key issue here. Earlier on in the book, it is frequently mentioned how ‘illusionist’ new bloods can only create visual illusions - not any sounds. I don’t know about you, but if I was in a room and an explosion suddenly appeared, but it was completely silent, I’d be suspicious. But no, all the silvers in the room panic, and Morry and the other reds manage to escape.
Ok,ok this isn’t a major plot hole, but still.
Anyway, this is a good book, and if you are currently reading the red queen series, don’t give up after glass sword, and read this.
Next up… War storm
