(Netflix) Orange is the New Black (2013-2019) written by Lauren Morelli, Jenji Kohan, Tara Herrmann, Nick Jones, Sian Heder, and Sara Hess explores the life in one fictional women’s detention facility where shower stalls (the ones that work) smell of mildew and rot, where new inmates are starved in order to prove who is in charge of the kitchen, where bedbugs break out and where prison guards snap and cause tremendous destruction of lives and relationships for inmates and fellow guards. Schemes and scams abound and industries occur to make up for the lack of funds in commissary. Love, unbearing of masks that worked for them in the world, bodily needs, peer punishment and abuse, deeper truths all are exposed in the context of the prison industrial complex.
