Disclaimer: I have not read the book upon which this movie is based. My opinions are purely based on the film, and the opinions of one who has read the novel might differ from mine.
I think "Where the Crawdads Sing" is a very unique movie. The plot may not be the most exciting and the direction may not be award worthy, but this movie definitely stands out among the ones that I have watched lately.
Every single character was thoroughly thought-inspiring, and I think that the respective actors and actresses have done justice to the various roles they have played.
This isn't the first movie touching on the themes of abuse, abandonment and "growing up tough", but Olivia Newman has certainly presented these ideas uniquely. Watching the protagonist's perseverance and will to survive alone on the outskirts of society without so much as a single pillar left for her to lean on and learn from, is heartbreakingly satisfying. Why I say this is simply due to the fact that I know that I would not have lasted a week if I were in her place. I found myself feeling immense respect for Kya, and for Daisy Edgar-Jones, who has brilliantly shown her story. I felt anger, desperation, happiness and shock in equal proportions.
Watch first, judge later.
