Someone asked about girls -- in many states there is a corresponding event for girls; it is unfortunate that the producers omitted that information.
This is, as every documentary, somewhat skewed. It is pretty strictly organized, but dealing with a bunch of high schoolers in a group this size requires it. This is not about Hitler Youth or anything like that; the program is as good as the people who run it. It's not different from Youth in Government, which some states also have, or state student government organizations that students participate in. If you even just read the Wikipedia entry, you can see that it can be well organized to teach them a lot about local government. It's also interesting to me that they chose Texas. I suspect that Boys State looks quite a bit different in other parts of the country (they have it in every state).
