If you’re looking for Gladiator -type action - don’t . This movie is a slow-moving drama about a woman’s honor and how men have none. There are no good guys here. I believe this is a Hollywood insider using the paradigm of a medieval setting to show just how archaic mens thinking towards women is - ie, ‘medieval’, and in so doing is telling the story of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein from an insiders viewpoint, for those who have eyes to see it
it also has a twist which should be obvious but is Pooh-pooed by the minds of the day in the film - namely that it is clear her child is a product of rape but while the great thinkers of the day say it is science that rape cannot lead to pregnancy itbisnkotnso funny when we realize that the religious right say the same thing today . Meanwhile the child’s very existence shows that to some extent her husbands cold impersonal touch - which could never yield a pregnancy - felt more like rape to her than the crime of passion- which did.
If you stay with the film and look past the story at hand and into its metaphors it’s a film of great beauty and depth with both contradiction and integrity. using film for its highest virtue - epic storytelling
