My father wrote the screenplay for this movie, so I cannot really be objective about it. I think it was his favorite of the movies that he wrote -- but I believe that had less to do with the quality of the movie itself, and more with the experience of researching and writing it, and then living in India while it was being filmed. The movie was banned in India when it first came out, because it was feared that the scenes of Gandhi's assassination and funeral would prompt riots. The actor who played Gandhi, J.S, Casshyap, was not a professional actor, but a schoolteacher who had been waiting his whole life to play Gandhi. (I think this fact was another thing about the movie that my father particularly liked.)
