The incredible realism of this 2019 film ultimately left the audience both in awe and detached. Other than Mufasa’s death (in every way, from Scar’s hideous jab to the pathetic and emotionally absent portrayal of Simba’s grief so soon after), I would say this movie is a remake to be proud of.
It is best watched as it’s own creation, not in comparison to its classic counterpart. The message shifts slightly, from the particularly intimate theme of self-acceptance and empowerment that the original offers, to tolerance as a whole with a noticeable, “modern mindset” twist.
