[SPOILERS]
First of all I would like to start on a positive note to say that the mechanics of the game are very fluid, I enjoyed the melee game play it was incredible to fight people and be able to dodge there attacks. Being able to crouch in the grass was an interesting mechanic for the game. Crafting the new weapons was incredible and fluid. Despite backlash from many players about making Ellie gay, I think it built on her character, also in the remastered edition of the last of us it included a DLC, where it shows Ellie having feelings for her best friend. Therefore, it should not have come as a surprise for players that Ellie was openly gay. Adding a transgender character also was great for the story-line and representation.
Now here are my issues with the game. The thing that made the Last of Us an instant classic was, Joel, a man that was a survivor who had lost his daughter and was making his way into the post-apocalyptic world. Joel and Ellie's father-daughter dynamic is what made the game entertaining and emotional. Within 2 hours of game-play Joel is killed. Despite the teaser trailer implying he would be alive. For many fans of the original game this was a slap to the face. I felt that naughty dog was trying to shock the audience in order to engage the players, but instead it enraged most of them.
Half of the game is now playing as Ellie who is tagged along by her partner, who despite being likable cannot fill Joel's spot.
Then for 10 hours the players have to navigate the world as Abby the person who killed Joel. Which was incredibly frustrating, I understand that the intention was to humanize Abby. However, characters such Marlene and Bill were easy to sympathize with in the original last of us, and it did not require the players to play as them, let alone have to spend 10+ hours playing as them.
The other issues I have with the story line is that once you play as Abby, you are introduced to a wide variety of characters. So many characters in fact, that at times I confused them. There were too many characters that even while playing I knew they were not going be relevant to the story, and would be killed off within hours.
One of my other issues was the amount of groups in the game such as WLF (Basically the new fireflies), Serafites/SCARS (Cult), and The Rattlers ( The Redneck Group). I understand that in story there would be a lot antagonists, however the game tried to humanize all of them at the same time which felt overwhelming. The original may have had a few groups, but they were only important as obstacles for the main characters and their goals.
The biggest issue I have with the game is character development and motivations in the game. It is revealed throughout the game that Ellie finds out that Joel lied about what happened with the fireflies. And throughout the game Ellie harbors resentment towards Joel. Yet it is never outwardly mentioned that Ellie understands Joel's reasoning. Ellie never understood that Joel saw Ellie as a daughter. Ellie just views Joel's decision as an opportunity taken away from her to be something more, a martyr even.
Now moving onto Abby, I did not need to know everything about her friends and her past relationships. It felt as if the writers were just trying to fill in the time with her backstory. When Abby's motivation and empathy came from losing her father at the hands of Joel.
Overall it was good game in general, but not a good game of a Last of Us sequel. I hope that Naughty Dog ends the series here or pulls some miracle where they can fix their mistakes.
