A Quiet Place: Day One
Right, Wrong, Missing, Confusing
What’s Right:
A Quiet Place: Day One” gets several things right.
-The CGI is top-tier, crafting a believable, immersive world.
-The acting is spot-on, pulling you into the characters’ struggles. A standout scene with a marionette puppeteer genuinely tugs at the heartstrings.
-The cinematography is also quite exquisite, with every shot enhancing the story rather than distracting from it.
What’s Wrong:
However, the film isn’t without its missteps.
-The cat. Oh, the cat. It felt like the filmmakers had a side bet to see how many ridiculous situations they could place it in.
-Also, what’s got the cat’s tongue? The cat’s silent, omnipresent nature in a world where silence means survival was more laughable than engaging. I genuinely walked away thinking more about the stupid cat than anything… which for me was a wrong.
-The character development required a magnifying glass to follow at times, making the narrative hard to grasp and disjointed
-Also…the crucial discovery of silence as a defense against the monsters was treated almost like an afterthought—blink, and you’d miss it.
What’s Missing:
-The film is surprisingly light on scares for a horror flick.
-As a prequel, it missed a golden opportunity to bridge to the next movie. Cameos or nods to John Krasinski or Emily Blunt would have added much-needed depth and continuity.
-The quiet setting screamed (ironically) for sound-based jump scares, but those were few and far between.
What’s Confusing:
-Character decisions were often baffling. One minute a character is risking it all to silently save a cat inches away from one of the creatures; the next, they’re making enough noise to wake the dead because some books fell. Consistency, anyone? These inconsistencies broke the immersion and left me scratching my head.
Conclusion:
Overall, I walked out of the theater feeling underwhelmed. The movie isn’t bad, but it’s not one that will stick with you. For a horror movie in 2024 it is “family-friendly” which is a nice change of pace, but it lacks the emotional and thrilling punch of its predecessors If you’re looking for a life-changing experience, this isn’t it. But if you need a decent date night movie, it’ll do.
