All families need to watch this series with their children if they can find it on television. I am 67 years old. I was 24 years old when this mini-series came on television. We watched it as a family. I was born in Philadelphia and moved to the suburbs when I was two years old. I did not grow up, nor was I exposed to, the way African Americans were treated in the South. My family was Catholic, I did hear of the KKK and was scared. They came after Catholics, too.
This mini-series was POWERFUL and it made me ill, really sick to my stomach, to think that human beings could be treated in this manner.
When I moved to LA, a year later, i learned first hand about racism...on both side but predominately white. I spent the next 30 years teaching in schools where I was the minority and giving all that I had to teach all children the way I wanted mine to be taught. It took me awhile to be accepted but eventually I was.
