As a mexican who has lived the harsh reality of what drug trafficking has done to my country and our region, this film struck me as profoundly disrespectful. It doesn’t just skim the surface of a deeply painful issue—it does so with a tone-deafness that feels like an insult to those who have suffered the most.
To help others understand, imagine a movie about 9/11 where the terrorists responsible are rewritten as misunderstood antiheroes, and the thousands of lives lost are pushed to the background, their weight erased from the story. Add to that some catchy songs that try to profit off the tragedy and a cast that barely includes any Americans—or maybe just one.
This is how far removed and offensive this film feels. It reduces real pain, real loss, and real struggles into an empty spectacle, robbing it of any respect or purpose.
