I read this book when I had very bad anxiety which caused my depression. The idea behind this book is that we create our own fears and insecurities so that we don’t have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, although this may be true for some, for me, my fear and ptsd (sickness) would make me terribly agoraphobic and give me panic attacks which I did not have control over.
After reading this book I felt like it was my fault I had this PTSD and felt useless because I couldn’t snap out of it. (Which this book not so subtly suggests). I am now on antidepressants and doing MUCH better and still feel the same about this book.
I think in this day and age it’s important to understand that depression/anxiety is an ILLNESS that needs medical treatment and Is not a choice. This book is very old school and suggests we are wearing our depression/anxiety as a mask to hide our true selves when in reality depression is not allowing us to be our true selves in most cases. Maybe this book will be great for someone who is experiencing minor disappointment, would not recommend for someone who is looking for enlightenment or is suffering from any symptoms of depression/anxiety.
Ofcourse maybe it’s target reader is someone who does not have negative thoughts and does not suffer from anxieties or depression. However the marketing ‘free yourself’ ‘change your life’ ‘achieve happiness’ seems to be targeted at people going through a rough time so if you are I suggest you choose a different book.
