I'm going to go spoiler free with this review. Now, I understand many people are upset over certain events of the game. I get that, but sadly these are people fundamentally missing the point and allure of the game. "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." We play games to escape reality. Reality is chock full of morally grey areas, where motivations to do what they think are right have dire consequences for many people caught in the crossfire, so to speak. LoU2 does not have true, white hat heroes. They are human, they are flawed, the hurt others directly and indirectly in their pursuits. Even if they thought they did right, doesn't necessarily mean it was right for others. That, right there, is the point of the game. Joel did some bad stuff in the first game. Ellie and Abby do some very bad stuff in this one. Are any of them evil, or actually bad guys? No. They are simply very messed up people, as any of us would be in the same setting. Were their horrific actions justified? Probably not, but in the real world, we are faced with choices that could have consequences for others. It's unavoidable.
As for the gameplay, it's not perfect, but the imperfections are greatly overshadowed by story, gorgeous settings and graphics, and some very intense moments, both story and gameplay related. Though some have mentioned the pacing is awkward and disjointed, I disagree. The game gets pretty intense at times, so taking a bit of a breather between these areas helps. The game is a memorable experience through and through.
Ok, maybe a few spoilers. Don't read further if you haven't played through it entirely. There were some unanswered questions that bugged me. I never got a full disclosure of the problems between the wolves and seraphites. I have my theories, but still wish to know more. And, *big spoiler, last chapter bit*, what of the remaining and regrouping Fireflies? That, combined with the epilogue, leaves things open for a potential LoU3. Though if they do, I hope it steers away from the revenge/consequences of revenge, storyline.
Regardless, they main thing people should always try to do eith any kind of media, whether it's games, tv, movies, etc. is to try to keep what you wish to have happen at the door. Go in with a clear, open mind. If not, you'll just miss out on things both good and bad. I love thus game as much as the first, though for different reasons. I don't regret playing it at all, and am in the middle of a second playthrough.
