I’m of mixed reaction to this game.
I have played many RPG games over the years which I have enjoyed and replayed more than once. When I saw the gameplay videos and various pc reviews of the game, I decided to pre-order for the PS5 thinking this would be the game I would never put down. The hype around it and the presentation from the developers sold me in an instant, it’s been a long time since an extremely well-received game has been brought to the market.
The game itself is very well structured and you can tell a lot of hours went into making this game and to be released fully developed with rare issues is a very rare thing these days.
The story and the dialogue between characters are well written, the Dungeons and Dragon spin is a little strange but I got over it after a few days of playing.
But…
It hasn’t hooked me into wanting to play it consistently and even play it at all if I am honest. I have been on and off with the game, I played a few days then played some other game and then returned to give it another chance.
The battle system is my biggest issue, it’s not just a turn-based game, it is like playing a strategic board game where you really need to think about how best to play every situation. This isn’t normally a problem if you have the time to sit there and play 4 + hours each time but these days I’m lucky to get 2+ on a few days. You are not really introduced into the battle system much at the beginning so it can be overwhelming how to play it even on the easy settings. You eventually do get the swing of it but the spells available to you and the levelling up spells are just difficult for beginners to really get to grips with it.
The looting system is another issue of mine that I have problems with, it’s difficult to put into words but it’s sort of difficult to navigate through and strangely designed. Perhaps I am to use other RPGS methods and their colourful designs that don’t appeal to me.
The game is worthy of the hype if you have the time but perhaps It’s more me reaching a certain milestone in my life where I don’t have the time to dedicate to such a beautifully crafted game that makes me struggle with it.
I will keep playing it now and then but I doubt it’s my game of the year.
