I have never written a review before and most likely will never again, but I remember in 2021 watching the Parasite movie my first ever South Korean movie I had watched and immediately I went on a binge spree to watch as many South Korean movies as I could.
And by fate while scrolling through netflix, I never once had the inclination to watch a K-drama, but somehow I decided to give Sweet Home a watch and my gosh I had never experienced something so gripping, so captivating, so mesmerizing and thus my obsession with Korean dramas began hence why sweet home is so special to me it was the first ever Korean series I ever watched.
To give my experience with sweet home season 1, every monster that was introduced had a unique and curious personality to them. The rarity of the monsters made their appearances so frightening and fearful. I was curious to see more monsters, and yet I was dreading and scared for the people living in the apartment. And this brings me to my next point the cast of season 1 was done and handled with perfection. Every member in the apartment had a fleshed out character and elements of growth and individualized personality. The series focused more so on philosophical and moral questions, it was thought provoking while not overly relying on action and monster scenes to garner captivation and intrigue. Another important factor the music in season 1 was so memorable and was so perfectly integrated. My praise for season one can not emphasized more, naturally there are way more factors I can mention but as I said this is my first review so I have no idea what the hell I am doing.
Now onto season 2 and my goodness, everything that was perfect with season 1 was tossed out the window. Season 2 was awful and I only managed to watch just 1 episode, I skipped the 6 other episodes just so I could fast-forward the last episode. I felt betrayed that the fundamentals of what made season 1 special was substituted with senseless plot points, a reliant on awful CGI monsters that had no substance as opposed to their counter-parts of season 1. And the cast why, why were there so many actors. As I type this review I have season 3 playing in the background and I could care less about what is happening I am only watching the last season out of obligation. Oh and just for meaningless plot the "Protein monster" makes a return in season 3 and compared to how menacing he was in season 1 the version of him in season 3 is a pitiful joke almost laughable.
In conclusion I am so conflicted that a series so, so special to me has ended with two disgraceful seasons and yes season 3 is just as awful as season 2 not even worth a review. Alas there are still other seasons of Korean series to be released in 2024 i.e. squid game, hellbound etc... so even though there are other series that will appease the pain I felt watching season 2 and 3 of sweet home, nothing will be able to fill the void and betrayal I felt, and so to remember sweet home I will only watch season 1 I wish to only remember the good of sweet home season 1 because it was my first ever korean series lol.
