If you want to read a layered experience of what it means to explore identity inside and out, you will tackle Margo Jefferson’s Constructing a Nervous System. That said, this memoir befits the complex history of an extremely bright, sensitive and perceptive human’s process of coming to terms with the many sometimes contradictory pieces of her very own “me-ness”. Born in a box of being and looking the part of success, she has stepped out to look at what was always under the surface. I plan to read and reread this book multiple times. It’s a difficult read which parallels the texture of the subject matter. I have the utmost appreciation for this epic memoir.
