This movie really took me by surprise. It starts off as an ode to the "golden age of adult movies" before turning into a old school slasher. The set designs are so simple, but feel so realistic and not over the top as some films set back in the day are, and at times you think you are watching something straight out of the 1970's. It really is a fun, campy, slasher that takes time to introduce the characters of the story before things start to get bloody, unlike most other slashers who introduce characters only for them to be killed immediantly, so "X" really allows us to resonate with the characters. The idea to have the same actress play Maxine, the final girl, and Pearl, the main villain, was genius and really plays a key part in what the movie stands for: Aging, and longing over past regrets. I usually avoid the slashers where the stories are built around the kills or the s*x, but X puts a unique twist on a standard horror flick.
