I had a hard time reconciling that this was written by Rick Riordan. My kids & I have thoroughly enjoyed all Riordan’s prior books - but this one was very lacking. Almost no trace of his usual sense of humor that we love. The plot was all right. Also why did we have to dwell on the main character’s menstrual cramps so much? It really didn’t have anything to do with the story. Not up to par for Riordan. Still looking forward to reading more from him in the future!

I was drawn in at first by his lovely writing in the first page - choice of words, the way he painted the picture. Sadly I lost interest after the first dozen pages or so. Long meandering passages, no sensible chapter breaks, made it hard to follow. And by the end I couldn’t even concentrate on the “love” story because I was so distracted by the pedophilia!! Fermina was an admirable character … but I never did sympathize with Florentino. Would NOT recommend.
