It has a stronger narrative than the two earlier films. There is a dark.brooding atmosphere and more emphasis on creating realistic characters to stand alongside the familiar set piece action. There is a strong and distinguished supporting cast including Charles Dance and Brian Glover.I like the idea of a penal colony on a distant planet.A motley group of psychopaths and the genetically retarded who have found religion in a god forsaken cesspit at the back of an interstellar beyond.
The cinematography is artistically presented and it is deftly directed by the talented David Fincher.
For me,it’s the superior film in the franchise. It has a soulful heart that juxtaposes nicely with the action sequences and yet still retains that sense of claustrophobic terror from the original instalment. The slowly evolving relationship between Dance’s sensitive but flawed Doctor and Ripley is skilfully woven. She expresses a warmth and vulnerability that manages to humanise our strong, fearless and highly intelligent heroine.
It’s a great film but I know that for action loving fans it may be too great a compromise of ideas especially after the nonstop thrill ride of Aliens. Its different to what I expected and so it works for me.
