No book had a greater influence on the food I have eaten for six decades. Dr Munro was the first to suggest “food combining”: proteins should not be eaten with carbohydrates, because they digest in different ways: acid for protein, alkaline for carbohydrates.
More importantly, he stressed the importance of eating a wide range of fruit and vegetables, the healthy reds, greens, and yellows. Others copied his ideas, without crediting him, but none quite matched the scale of his nutritional advice. It amounted to: don’t count calories, count the quality of the nutrients. Wise advice, which kept weight under control, and prevented many of life’s health issues arising, not least inflammation.
