Damn, such great writing chops and comedy, but I personally felt like barfing at the constant feeling in my heart that this show was written by an Indian girl who doesn't like other Indians as much as white people and always desperately wanted to be white. The POC characters are stupid and side-lined except for her. The relationships are unrealistic because the guys she's dating - no offense - but in real life they would never go for her and race would be an issue - that's a reality that's hard to ignore. You end up just feeling like you're watching her childhood fantasy of wishing she isn't who she is. It's sad and after a while, in between the great storylines, it feels really neurotic...this one Indian woman amongst a sea of white people. We can't expect women of color to do the heavy lifting in terms of race, but the self-hatred can't be ignored when you do what white people have been doing to POC for decades in your own show, where you have the power to change that in the casting of more POC characters. I just felt sick and sad watching it as a POC who loves myself in a healthy and balanced way. I don't see white people as superior to me or more desirable. As talented as Khaling is as a writer, she clearly doesn't love who she is. And you know what - that's ok, it's a big disease out there by a lot of POC, but I don't need to watch it.
