What needs to be said has been said, but Iโd like to say something about Sonamโs acting.
The focus isnโt truly on the relatipnship, itโs focused on Sweetyโs psyche and how she has repressed her emotions. She has to hide her emotions around her family. When you do that, expressing your emotions can be hard. Thatโs why when she cracks out of her shell, her emotions seem a bit stilted, sheโs not used to showing emotion.
Her acting and dialogue is very subtle. At the start, during the end of the jalebi scene, when her father talks about finding a guy for her, she walks away with a facial expression which, as a gay person in India, speaks volumes to me. Itโs subtle, but you can see her repressing the angst of keeping her identity a secret. And in the gurudwara, when she talks to Sahil, thereโs the implication that she has had suicidal thoughts (โYa to London jaungi, ya uparโ). All these subtle things makes this movie very valuable to me as an Indian closeted lesbian (still in school).
