What needs to be said has been said, but I’d like to say something about Sonam’s acting.
The focus isn’t truly on the relatipnship, it’s focused on Sweety’s psyche and how she has repressed her emotions. She has to hide her emotions around her family. When you do that, expressing your emotions can be hard. That’s why when she cracks out of her shell, her emotions seem a bit stilted, she’s not used to showing emotion.
Her acting and dialogue is very subtle. At the start, during the end of the jalebi scene, when her father talks about finding a guy for her, she walks away with a facial expression which, as a gay person in India, speaks volumes to me. It’s subtle, but you can see her repressing the angst of keeping her identity a secret. And in the gurudwara, when she talks to Sahil, there’s the implication that she has had suicidal thoughts (“Ya to London jaungi, ya upar”). All these subtle things makes this movie very valuable to me as an Indian closeted lesbian (still in school).
