When I read through the comments after watching this, I was struck by some people utterly loving it while others did not. The largest criticism I saw from people was that it glorifies alcoholism and abusive relationships. However, I think people are missing the point of the movie. It is not supposed to be a typical rom com or even a typical love story. It's about a boy and the struggles he faces in life. Yeah, many people may not suffer from an alcoholic dad, but it is larger than that. This movies tackles the issue of loving and believing in yourself. Now, I know that sounds incredibly cheesy, but there are many people in the world like Sutter that try caring or solving other people's problems, instead of addressing their own. The focus is not romance, but self-discovery. Maybe it is more advertised as being this romantic movie, and for that I would say they need to change the ad. Overall, this movie is raw, it doesn't sugarcoat things. It doesn't paint the picture that someone can just change in an instant, it takes time. There are elements that are not realistic, but if I am being frank there are not many movies that are completely realistic.
