I won't go into as lengthy a review as some have but I will say that many of the negative reviews seem to come from people who came into the movie expecting political brainwashing from the progressive left. It would be near impossible to change their minds.
I am not a Superman superfan. I have not read every issue of the comics. I don't know every bit of the lore. But I have always enjoyed the ideals of Superman and what he represents. I think this film executes that splendidly, although not always perfectly.
There are some reasonable criticisms, I believe. Turning his biological parents into tyrannical individuals who wanted Kal-El to dominate humanity is both unnecessary and misses the mark for their established characters. But, it did allow for his adoptive parents to have some very endearing and uplifting moments later in the film. Could they have still had those moments without shredding the legacy of his mother and father? Yes. But I do think it made the moment more potent given all that Superman endures up to that point in the movie.
Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Holt shine in their respective roles as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. This is the first superhero movie in some time that I didn't relate to the bad guy, or at least cheer for them a little bit. Luthor is a detestable, scummy villain and that is brought out wonderfully.
The film as a whole hit all the notes I was hoping for and while it is not a perfect film, it was well worth spending the money on day 1 to see it in IMAX. For that reason, I am giving it 5 stars.
