This was the 4th novel I've read by Anthony Doerr.
All the Light We Cannot See 5/5
Cloud Cuckoo Land 5/5
Four Seasons in Rome 4/5
About Grace 2/5
Anthony Doerr does an exceptional job portraying the environment, as well as the characteristics of water in this novel. The various settings were described with such detail and emotion and were taken into consideration on they affected the characters.
However, I couldn't bring myself to care about the protagonist, David Winkler, at all. Between his fleeing personality and lack of morality, I found myself unispired by his actions. Roughly halfway through the book I realized I was not invested in him at all, and could care less about the conclusion.
I really enjoy the writing style of Anthony Doerr, and would recommend this if you do too, but this one just didn't do it for me.
